The Freedom Ride for homeless pets, as it’s known, is the perfect description for the animals escaping terrible abuse, mistreatment and neglect in some parts of Appalachia. Volunteers with the Friends of Russell County Virginia Animal Shelter (FRCVAS) have saved countless lives and helped change them in incredible ways. Once-discarded animals are becoming happy and well-adjusted pets thanks to FRCVAS. These helpless creatures are experiencing real love.
Meet some of the Freedom Riders.
It was a dark night when Thor, a handsome, brindle-colored Bulldog rambled down a dark country highway, with a metal cord embedded in his neck. The wound was deep and he had a raging skin infection.
Penny spent the first 4 years of her life hopelessly chained to a plastic ramshackle of a dog house with minimal food or water. She was bought and bred for hunting. She became one of 55 dogs hoarded on a hidden property in southwest Virginia.
Choco arrived at the shelter with twisted and painfully matted hair. The tangles were so tight that his skin tore and bled. He was so flea-infested that when his face was rinsed, the bath water turned blood red.
These are just three examples of animals FRCVAS volunteers have saved. We could go on, and on, and on.
Friends of Russell County Virginia Animal (FRCVAS), finds news homes with loving owners for so many neglected and mistreated pets.
Before August of 2015, these animals would have been euthanized after 5 days at the shelter. In 2016, the Russell County, VA Animal Shelter had a 99% live transfer of all animals. That means they were either adopted out to fully vetted families, or taken into the transport program provided by FRCVAS. That’s what’s known as the “Freedom Ride.”
They received the medical care they so desperately needed and have been given a second chance for a happy life. Whether by local adoption or transfer to in-state and out-of- state partner rescue groups, our animals find new homes with food, love and comfort they never knew existed before. Freedom.
Our organization aims to reduce the over population of animals by promoting and providing spay and neutering services and programs. Because of our dedication to life-saving programs, animals like Thor, Penny, and Choco experience mercy and healing.
Our animals have become service dogs to disabled veterans, therapy dogs for senior citizens, and best friends to little girls and boys. Once forgotten or discarded, they are now cherished and their owners care for their every need.
The mission is not complete and the work has just begun. Each month 60-70 animals cross the threshold of the shelter.
The time clock starts at the door for planning their future before building is full again. We are always in need of volunteers and monetary and physical donations to support our life-saving work.
Without this shared passion, the animals will quickly be forgotten and disposed of again.
